The terrible accident occurred at the end of the day on a very busy section of the A13. Shortly before 6 p.m., on the section of motorway located under the tunnel near the town of Mantes-la-Ville, in the Yvelines, a  vehicle travelling in the direction of the provinces-Paris caught fire for an unknown reason.

“There appears to have been no collision, neither with equipment nor with another vehicle. The car seems to have spontaneously combusted,” TF1info learned from firefighters on Sunday morning, September 13. The toll is very heavy: “A pregnant woman died. A very young child, who was in the car with her, also died. A man, who was also in the car when it caught fire, was taken to the hospital in serious condition,” the same source added.

74 firefighters and 41 vehicles on site

According to a police source, the woman was in the back of the vehicle with the child. The victims, trapped by the flames and smoke, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver managed to escape the vehicle. Severely burned, he was initially treated by firefighters before being transported by ambulance to a Paris hospital. A witness to the accident, suffering from shock, was also taken to the hospital.

In total, 74 firefighters were mobilized for this operation, which also required the deployment of 31 vehicles, according to the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service of 78.

An investigation has been opened by the Versailles prosecutor’s office to determine the cause of death. “The victims have not yet been identified. Autopsies will be performed this week,” the prosecutor’s office told TF1info. It also stated that “the man who was in the car is in critical condition” and that any possible family relationship between the victims has not yet been established due to the fact that some have not yet been identified. Finally, it added that the type of vehicle, “given its condition,” was not yet known

Investigators conducted several examinations and observations at the scene to try to determine how the fire started. Traffic was stopped in both directions and detours were put in place before being restored later that evening.
